Ingredients

1 cuptoor dal1 cuprice4 cupswater½ tspturmeric powderto tasteSaltas needed (to adjust consistency after cooking)Hot water2-4 tspghee (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. 01

Add the rice and toor dal to a bowl and wash them together 3 times with fresh water, gently rubbing the grains between your fingers. Drain well after the final rinse.

  2. 02

Transfer the washed rice and dal to the Instant Pot.

  3. 03

Add 2 cups water, turmeric powder, and salt. Stir once to combine.

  4. 04

Close the lid, set the valve to Sealing, and cook on Pressure Cook (High) for 6 minutes.

  5. 05

Allow the pressure to release naturally for about 10 minutes, then carefully release any remaining pressure.

  6. 06

Open the lid and mix the dal rice well. Add hot water, a little at a time, until you reach your preferred consistency. Stir thoroughly until smooth and creamy.

  7. 07

This simple dal rice tastes wonderful with a dollop of ghee. Enjoy it with a spoonful of avakaya pacchadi, or pair it with any sides such as a koora, pulusu, or rasam (see other recipes).

Day 2 plan

Refrigerate portions promptly. Reheat with a splash of water to loosen; add fresh yogurt, pickle, chutney, or toppings on day two.
